President of the Czech Society for Oncology

Jiří Vorlíček MD, Prof, CSc

Prof (Dr) Jiří Vorlíček

President of the Czech Society for Oncology and leading froce behind Czech National Cancer Control Programme.

A leading Czech oncologist, Prof Vorlíček is President of the Czech Society for Oncology. In parallel, he is Director of the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute.

As President of the Czech Society for Oncology, Prof Vorlíček was a leading force in creating the Czech National Cancer Control Programme, which was approved and recommended for realisation by the Board of the Czech Society for Oncology and the Scientific Council of the Czech Ministry of Health.

Finally, Prof Vorlíček has spoken on current problems facing Czech healthcare in general. To this end, he has called for availability of life-saving or considerably life-extending medicines, while in parallel presenting possibilities for increased resources for healthcare. The Czech Society for Oncology has strongly objected to a decree from 2006 on reimbursement limits for medicines, stating that these ‘preclude patients from access to new effective medicines and demean oncologists’ medical options’.

In September 2007, the Czech Society for Oncology started cooperating with Cancer United in order to promote the best possible standards of treatment for all cancer patients across Europe.

Václav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic, in 2007 awarded Prof Vorlíček a Medal of Merit for meritorious services to the State in the area of science.
