Oncologists Accredited Workplaces Providing Best Care

Press release

Prague 25. January 2006 – Czech Oncological Society CLS JEP (COS) introduced today a network of 18 workplaces at which, from 1.January 2006, it guarantees patients the provision of complex care in the area of diagnostics and treatment of tumour illnesses. It is made up of medical facilities with status of a Complex Oncological Centre (COC) or Complex Oncological Group (COG). Granting of Status was decided by the Board of COS on the basis of individual workplaces’ applications at the end of last year.

The accreditation system doesn’t mean that patients will only be treated at some twenty selected centres,” said President of COS, Prof. MUDr. Jiří Vorlíček. “Current oncological and radio therapeutic workplaces in smaller towns will also be part of the emerging Czech Network of Oncological Centres. The establishment of regional networks will be fully in the hands of the individual accredited workplaces. They will decide on which centres in their area of competence will they co-operate with and what performances will they define for them on the basis of their equipment and experience,” he added. According to Vorlicek, such a system is fully functional for years now for example in haematology or paediatrics.

In Prague COS accredited two Complex Oncological Centres: COC FN Královské Vinohrady a COC FN Motol with a co-operative group of ÚVN and Homolka Hospital. A group of oncology clinics and institutes of Prague faculty hospitals was accredited as Complex Oncological Group (COG) Prague and Central Bohemian Region. COC Status was also granted to faculty hospitals in Brno, Pilsen, Olomouc, Ostrava and Hradec Králové, Masaryk Oncology Institute in Brno, Chomutov Hospital, Ústí nad Labem, Liberec, Pardubice, České Budějovice, Jihlava, Zlín and Nový Jicin.

Oncocentres Council of the Czech Republic created by COS will be the co-ordinating body. Provided there is co-operation from state administrative bodies, local governments and payers, COS supposes that the system can be put into practice in the course of 2006 and 2007.
