Abstract: Necrosis and apoptosis are not mutually exclusive phenomenon within tumors, but the latter is of fundamental importance in oncology, since the beneficial effect of most anti-cancer therapies is due to the induction of apoptosis. This review focuses on the mechanisms controlling apoptosis, and briefly discusses the death pathways triggerred by state-of-the-art therapies.
