Klin Onkol 2001; 14(4): 131-134.

Summary: Backgrounds: Worldwide increase of the incidence of testicular cancer was also reflected in the increasing number of these malignancies in the Slovak Republic. The successes reached in diagnosis and following therapy of testicular tumors placed Slovakia, as far as relationship between incidence and mortality is concerned, on the same level with some industrialized countries of Northern and Western Europe. For many years in Slovakia there weren’t appropriate information about the risk factors, diagnosis and therapy of tumors of the testis. Design and subjects: Lack of the accurate information about the occurrence of testicular tumors in Slovakia has helped to create a new multicentric retrospective study, based on occurrence, histology, diagnosis and treatment of the malignant tumors of the testis in the Slovak Republic. Methods and results: The analyzed study group consists of 1010 patients with testicular tumors, diagnosed from the beginning of 1993 to the end of 1997. Identification and history data about the patients were obtained from the heads of the urology departments in Slovakia. Only National Institute of Oncology and the Department of Oncology of the Pediatric University Hospital in Bratislava and urology departments in Piestany and Rimavska Sobota didn’t react to the request about sending this information. In this study there were found considerable differences between information obtained from the urology departments and information published by the National Cancer Register of the Slovak Republic. Mentioned differences result from the non exact reports about the occurrence and deaths on this malignant illness by the particular departments in Slovakia which are diagnosing malignant diseases. Conclusions: The incidence of testicular tumors in Slovakia was quite high with indicated increase from the year 1993. In this time testicular tumors present 1,9 % of all the malignant diseases and 11,1 % of all the urology malignancies in the male population in Slovakia. Ascertained information is higher than the one published by the National Cancer Register of the Slovak Republic from the last five official concluded years.
