Uveden začátek textu: The value of chest irradiation administered in addition to chemotherapy in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has been a subject of controversy in clinical oncology for over a decade. In most of the randomized trials performed so far radiotherapy resulted in significant improvement of disease control within the chest, but survival benefit, if any, was minimal. For this reason the long awaited results of the metaanalysis of all randomized trials evaluating the role of thoracic radiotherapy in limited SCLC presented by Arriagada and Mataanalysis Study Group has raised great interest. This analysis, pooling the results of 13 randomized trials performed in 8 countries (Australia, Denmark, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA) in which 2576 patients were enrolled, revealed small, yet significant survival benefit in patients given thoracic irradiation.
