Data on the occupations of malignant melanoma patients have been taken from the professional anamnesis records of 642 patients (334 males and 308 females) registrated during the years 1981-1987 in Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute - Brno, where cases of melanoma from South Moravia were concentrated. The distribution of professions in patients was compared with this distibution in all population of South Moravia (Registry of Czech Statistical Offece, Brno, 1980; professions of patients were distributed according the same model). The highest rate of incidence was found in men working in the area of transport and communications (predominantly drivers and railwaymen) and in women working in bussiness and public catering (predominantly shop-assistants and cooks). The highly significant increase in melanoma was seen also in men working in education and health service and in women working in area of transport and communications.
