The effect of age on the breast cancer estrogen receptor level

Klin Onkol 1999; 12(1): 22-26.

Summary: Background: Examination of estrogen receptors is exploited for estimating the prognois and for deciding about hormonal therapy of breast cancer. These results in the homogenate are higher in older patients probably due to the influence of decreases in the function of the ovaries. For this reason, some authors use a higher boundary between positivity and negativity for postmenopausal than for premenopausal patients.

Design and Subjects:

We performed a study of clinical results for estrogen receptors in the group of patients from Pardubice and surrounding its with the use of simple statistical methods.

Methods and results:

In this work, we assessed the results of radioreceptor analysis of estrogen receptors (ER) in breast cancers of evaluation of results. In addition, we discussed the great differences in results of different authors in mean ER levels of oldest patients.

Conclusions:

We estmated that our results are more similar to Ithalian nonselected patients than to South-African selected patients in the more progressive stage of disease. The causes of this stage are probably more important than ethnical differences.

We suppose lhal the boundary betwen positivity and negativity is not a discontinual change between premenopausal and postrnenopausal patients bul a continual one (maybe with changes in its direction). In connection with solving this question, we discussed the possibility of a carcinopromotional influence mediated by high levels of ER.
