Summary: Summarised information on the role of chemotherapy in the major brain tumour groups is reported: I. astrocytomas including glioblastoma multiforme, II. oligodendrogliornas and III. primary brain maiignant lymphomas. The most significant benefit of chemotherapy was shown in tumours with an oligodendroglioma component and in lymphomas. Other experimentai approaches used to increase concentration of chemotherapeutics in brain tumours and thus to improve treatrnent efficacy, e.g. the intra tumoral application of drugs using different types of reservoirs and the clinicaily efficient locai carmustin (BCNU) Gliadel were analysed.
