Summary: Background: To asses an influence of the digital recta! exarnination, the transrectal u1trasound exarnination and the ultrasound-guided biopsy of the prostate towards patients quality of life with respect to the digital rectal exarnination of prostate and prostate specific antigen. Fo11owing the basic evaluation ultrasound with biopsy gun needle were used. Methods and results: Each patient filled in specific self -administrate questionnaire after core biopsy. The questionnaires assessed patients quality orliCe, complications and attitudes towards prostate cancer and repeated biopsy in case of negative results. 215 (71 %) questionnaires from 303 patients showed that hematuria had occured in 67 patients (31 %), recta! bleeding in 45 (21%), dysuria in 39 (18%), pain afterbiopsy in 33 (15%), hematospermia in 33 (15%) and fever in 13 (6%) patients. Transrectal ultrasound of the prostate, biopsy of the prostate and digital rectal exarnination in descending order were reported as the most painful procedures. After negative prostate biopsy, 75 (35%) patients did not agree with repeated procedures. Conclusions: Patients refusal of repeated prostate biopsy is frequent. It seems helpful to discuss with such patients the necessity to employ futher procedure even in case of negative results.
