Metallic Stents in the Treatment of Patients with Pulmonary Carcinoma (except bronchial tree)

Summary: Purpose: Authors present group of patients to be discussed, with whom they were managing complications of malignant pulmonary carcinoma (pharyngeal stenosis, tracheoesophageal fistula, and vena cava superior stenosis) with inserting metallic stent. Method and Materials: Since October 1993 till September 1999 the author' s inserted metallic stent to 21 patients with malignant esophagea] stenosis induced by pulmonary/bronchogenic carcinoma. Stent for the syndrome of cava superior ve in was inserted in five patients. Results: Troubles with swallowing regressed by 2 days after stent insertión. 96% of patients followed up swallowing semisolid food until the end. Tracheoesophageal fistula was successfully managed in all cases. 30-day mortality of patients with malignant esophageal stenosis was 19% (4 patients). Average length of life in patients after stent insertion was 3.3 month, with tracheoesophageal fistula 1.9 month. None of these patients lived longer than 3 month. Cava superior vein stenosis or v. subclavia we managed in all the cases. Symptoms of the cava superior vein syndrome regressed by one week at the latest. We didn' t observe complications concerning the intervention in any case. Dne patient died 29 days after stent insertion. Average length of life of the other 4 patients was 4.2 month.
