A clue for choosing appropriate material for sample orientation in breast surgery

Summary: One of specific problems in breast conserving surgery is localization and postoperative orientation of the tissue specimen. The simplest way for orientation of a tissue sample is inserting of two marks showing two perpendicular directions. Our recommendation is insertion of these two marks stitches before complete removal of the sample in order to avoid a shift. In cases of microcalcification removal specimen radiography is essential. In these cases it is beneficial to use radioopaque material. Here we present a simple and inexpensive method for choosing of suitable material – x-ray of a series of stitch samples.
