Retrospective analysis of locally advanced rectal carcinoma treatment at the Institute of Radiation Oncology in the last six years.

Summary
Concomitant radiochemotherapy or preoperative radiotherapy have been proved to improve the outcome of locally advanced rectal cancer. In this group of 487 patients treated at the Institute of Radiation Oncology, Faculty Hospital Bulovka during 1998-2003 we evaluated the chance of sphincter sparing surgery, downstaging, the change of overall survival in regard to adjuvant therapy, and percentage of recurrences. The primary end point was overall survival.
