The development of the cancer registration system in the Czech Republic

Summary: The Czech Republic National Cancer Registry collects cancer diseases data from the whole area of the republic. It is a population registry with a comprehensive system of collection, quality control and occurence and trends analysis of these diseases. Since the obligatory notification of each case was established in 1953, the registration system has been developing step by step. In 1976 the cancer occurence data started to be processed by computers. After the year 1990, computers and SW appurtennant were distributed to all regional and district registry centres, which inicialized creation of these centre network coordinated by ÚZIS (Health Information and Statistics Institute) in Praha. On the district, regional and republic level this conception enables us to utilize the data recorded both for the therapeutical-preventive care and for statistical surveys and medical projects.

The report describes the development of the cancer registration system in the Czech Republic from its beginning up to the current day, with an emphasis on the last ten years.
