89 patients with breast cancer were treated conservatively in Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute during the years 1991-1993. After a widening of indications, 285 patients were treated in thes manner. In the first file one local recurency (1,1'%) was observed, 11 patients (12%) suffered distant metastases, 4 patients (4%) died from distant disease. In the second file no recurencies were observed till now. The authors consider the main conclusion from this work to be that stricter enforcement of conservative surgery is advantageous. Due to these efforts, the percentage of patients receiving conservative surgery of the breast has grown in our insitute from 18% in 1991 to 73% in 1996. Other possibilities of reduction of surgery in breast cancer are discussed.
