How does bone marrow regenerate after radiotherapy?

Klin Onkol 1997; 10(6): 192-194.

During the years 1988 to 1995, we identified hypoplastic bone marrow in the irradiated localities of 70 oncologic patients, mainly in the sternum. This hypoplasia with lipid metaplasia lasted as long as 26 years in some patients. According to our observations and findings, we no longer perform punctures of irradiated localities, since manipulation of these areas represents patient mutilation without apparent benefit.
