Intestinal polyposis syndrome and the genetics of colorectal carcinoma

Summary: Colorectal carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the intestinal tract. This shon review gives the characteristics of those individuals and their families who are genetically predisposed to the development of colorectal carcniom and also provides a suggestion for their follow - up. The review involves:

I. Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer

II. Syndromes with pre-existing polyposis - Familial adenomatous polyposis. Gardner's syndrome. Oldfield's syndrome, Turcot's syndrome

III. Syndromes with preexisting hamartous polyps - Juvenile polyposis. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, Cronkite-Canada syndrome, Ruval-caba-Myhre-Smith syndrome, Cowden's syndrome.

The aim of this article is to draw attention to practical aspects of these topics. The ability to recognise these syndromes may help early diagnosis and prevent loss of lives. A family registry consisting of families with a high risk of cancer is being established.
