Summary
The recent isolation of breast cancer predisposing genes allows the identification of women at high risk for breast cancer. Careful and intensive surveillance for this women is recommended. Althought it is recommended to start at a younger age, the sensitivity of the mammography decreases when breast tissue is dense (40-50% women under 50 years). The current studies made conclusion that mammography screening is not sufficient to ensure an early diagnosis of hereditary breast cancer. If MRI is integrated in surveillance program, early diagnosis seems to be possible. Breast MRI is superior to mammography and sonography for screening of women at high risk for breast cancer, as it can advance the detection of cancer still occult at mammography and sonography.
