Summary
In spite of the fact that breast carcinoma is nowadays treated conservatively in majority cases, there is also increasing demand for performing of prophylactic mastectomy. It is because of our improved understanding of breast carcinoma genetics and routine examination of mutations in BRCA1/2 genes. Author clarifies 3 principles of performing prophylactic mastectomy: definition of high-risk patients, efficiency of prophylactic mastectomy to prevent breast carcinoma and aesthetically acceptable results. Author define 17 most common indications for prophylactic mastectomy.
