Summary
Backgrounds: The purpose of this study is to objectify the short term impact of breast cancer screening program upon real data of breast cancer surgery.
Design and Subjects: Retrospective comparison of basic clinical data from patients operated in years 2001 and 2004 at the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute surgical ward. 657 patients were compared, 316 from the year 2001 and 341 from the year 2004.
Methods and Results: The comparison of these groups of patients, primarily operated on at the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute in the years 2001 and 2004, discovers the main difference in noticeable increase of pT1 tumors from 48.7% to 63%, while the percentage of of pT2 findings decreased from 43% to 30.2%. In concordance, the proportion of stage I patients rose from 33.5% to 45.7%.
Conclusions: The results show an interesting positive shift in the pattern of operated patients. Although we intentionally did not evaluate the method of primary diagnostics, it is more than probable that the main reason for this change was the introduction of breast screening.
