Summary: The effort of Czech haematologists to gain information about results achieved in the group of the most serious haematology disease with the most expensive treatment – in patients with acute leukaemia (AL) – initiated development of clinical register for parametrically standardized processing of diagnostic, prognostic and clinical data in 1996. Project titled ALERT (Acute LEukaemia – Clinical RegisTer) is professionally guaranteed by the Czech Haematological Society and all 6 centres for intensive haematological care for adults in the Czech Republic are involved since 2003. The project is newly based on progressive software tools including structured databases – communication and analytical tools and provides information service available on-line for all engaged centres. Since 1996, full-scaled clinical data from 1412 patients with AL has been collected and coded in ALERT database. Data model of the project enables even detailed analyses of therapeutic cycles and conclusions. Performed analyses document significant prognostic weight not only for risk factors available in the time of diagnosis, but also for applied therapeutic strategy and its accurate tailoring to gain treatment results of each treatment cycles. Each of these key data components must be included in the list if such population clinical register is targeted as feedback for therapeutic optimisation.
