Histiocytoses are a rare and diverse group of disorders occuring more often in children than in adults. The diseases are characterized by an infiltration and accumulation of cells of the monocyte-macrophage series in the involved tissues. The major forms of childhood histiocytosis are grouped into three classes. However, most of these disorders are not true malignant diseases although the use of antineoplastic agents in their tretment is frequent. Improvement in the treatment and outcome for patients with histiocytosis will depend on further elucidation of the etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases.
