Aim:

The incidence of ulcerative colitis in the Czech Republic is 5-8/100 000. Surgical intervention is required in 20-30% of patients, of which 5% have a confirmed malignancy. To evaluate a set of 41 patients operated for ulcerative colitis at the I. Clinic of Surgery between the years 2003-2012, focusing on the occurrence of colorectal carcinoma in the terrain of ulcerative colitis.

Patients and methods:

On our set of patients, we monitored the duration of conservative therapy, the regularity of coloscopic control examinations, family background and other risk factors in the development of ulcerative colitis.

Results:

Colorectal carcinoma was confirmed in 5/54 patients (9.3%). The types of operations performed on these patients were: 1x restorative proctocolectomy with IPAA, 1x colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis, 1x proctocolectomy, 1x derivative ileostomy in patient with generalization, and 1x explorative laparotomy in patient with generalization.

Conclusion:

Even with regular gastroenterological follow-up examinations, our set included 2 young patients with generalization of colorectal carcinoma.
